With or Without Kids: Why Schools are Important in Home Buying

Every homebuyer is likely to have heard over and over again that location is the top concern when buying a home. When choosing a house, you always look for one that’s beautiful, affordable, and convenient. You want it close to the mall or the supermarket, the nearest big city, and to transportation hubs. Before you seal the deal, however, you might want to check nearby schools.

Schools and educational facilities are important when buying a home, even if you don’t have kids.

Education and Better Living

Houses in or near quality school districts usually cost more—about $50 per square foot in places with top-ranked schools versus average-ranked educational institutions, according to one research. Houses in these places also typically retain their values better, which is a plus when it’s time to sell.

Here at Napa Valley, it’s easy to find a property with a good school district. Most of our communities have or are near schools, and we made finding these educational institutions easier.

We have integrated a map in our listings that let you find the nearest schools in a certain property you’re looking at. Simply click on a listed property, go to the “schools” tab and it’ll show you the nearby schools, as powered by Great! Schools.

Consistent Top Educational Performance

When it comes to academic performance index (API), California scored a 778 rating as of 2011. In this rating, scores range from 200-1000, with the target performance for schools at 800. This is still pretty high considering the state is the most populous one in the country and that it has the most students, with more than 6.2 million enrollees in public schools in the 2013-14 school year.

Another study said that California students attend school more consistently compared to their counterparts in other states. Such attendance record directly relates to better performance on national reading and math tests.

All these facts and more are great for families looking to move to the Golden State, but these are also helpful for those without children. As many in the industry say, when you buy a house, you’re not only buying a property, but also into the neighborhood.

Combine these noteworthy education facts and statistics with our dreamy properties in Oakville, Calistoga, Napa, Rutherford, St. Helena, or Yountville and you are sure to find a property that’s truly valuable, both in money and comfortable living.
